HanZi
One character, one story.
HanZi teaches you Chinese characters the way calligraphy always has: see the character, trace every stroke in order, then keep it alive with words, quizzes and smart review. Everything works offline — your progress stays on your device.

01
A quiet studio for a loud script
Today's plan, the lesson flow, the character wall and the review deck — four screens, zero clutter.

02
Everything you need to hold on to a character
Learn, trace, quiz, review — one calm loop that fits into a few minutes a day.
Structured courses
Character-by-character lessons from pinyin and strokes to words and sentences — organized into units you can finish in one sitting.
Stroke-by-stroke tracing
Watch the correct order, then trace each stroke in a practice grid. Wrong stroke? The app guides you back — three misses and you can skip ahead.
Smart review
Spaced repetition schedules each character for the day you're about to forget it, in small batches that fit a coffee break.
Mistake notebook
Every wrong answer is filed by cause — sound, tone, shape or meaning — and retried until you've beaten it three times in a row.
A daily plan that fits your day
New lessons, due reviews and mistake re-tests in one clear plan, with a daily-minutes goal and a streak that keeps you honest.
Fully offline
All courses, audio and stroke data live on your device. Learn on the subway, on a plane, anywhere — no account, no connection.
03
Your writing stays yours
No account, no sign-up, no network calls for your study data. Lessons, progress, review history and even your practice strokes live entirely on your device.
We collect nothing about how you learn. The only data that ever leaves the device is an anonymous crash report when something breaks. Read the policy for the full picture.
No account
Open the app and start learning — nothing to sign up for, nothing to link, nothing to leak.
You're in control
Your entire learning history is stored locally — uninstall or clear data, and it's gone. No copies in the cloud.
Transparent
A plain-language privacy policy explains exactly what is collected (crash logs) and why.

Frequently asked questions
The short answers, before you download.
What does HanZi do?
HanZi teaches Chinese characters through structured lessons: see the character and its story, trace it stroke by stroke, meet it in words, then keep it with quizzes and spaced review.
Do I need to know Chinese already?
No. Courses start from zero — pinyin, tones and the simplest characters — and build up unit by unit. Every explanation is in your own language.
What happens to my learning data?
It stays on your device. Progress, review history and mistake records never leave the app; the only data we ever receive is an anonymous crash report if the app breaks. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Which platforms are supported?
HanZi runs on iPhone and Android phones, with a dedicated two-column layout for iPad and landscape use.
How much does it cost?
You can download HanZi and start learning for free. HanZi Premium unlocks the full course library — monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime plan (prices shown in the app).
Which languages does the app speak?
The interface and every explanation come in 47 languages, from English, Japanese and Spanish to Thai, Vietnamese and Swahili.
